Leveraging Goldman Sachs Gives to Support Ubuntu Pathways’ Impact in Gqeberha, South Africa

04 OCT 2022

In the last 12 years, Goldman Sachs Gives has supported Ubuntu Pathways with grants totaling $1.8 million, including over $175,000 during the COVID-19 crisis. Most recently, this pivotal support helped enable Ubuntu to provide over 40,000 people with vaccines, daily food security for over 30,000 individuals, and lifesaving PPE to 27 community institutions.

We are proud to announce an exciting new project with South African non-profit, Ubuntu Pathways. Ubuntu breaks the cycle of poverty in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa, through a comprehensive system of education, health, and household support. Through Goldman Sachs Gives, we are helping Ubuntu place 2,000 children on a pathway out of poverty and lending assistance in providing them with resources to thrive from cradle to career.

Ubuntu’s Campus houses an array of world-class resources –– the region’s only state-of-the-art pediatric and HIV/TB clinic, an early childhood development center, a vocational training hub, a community theater, eco-friendly solar technology, and a rapidly growing independent primary school. Now, they are embarking on an ambitious project to build a high school to complete their academic pathway. This will enable Ubuntu to serve disadvantaged children all the way through graduation. The school will provide top-notch academics and social-emotional support. For underserved communities, empowering students to explore the visual arts, music, dance and theater is often an unattainable goal. A recent grant from Goldman Sachs Gives will help support Ubuntu to construct an innovative arts lab, which will provide a space for students to express themselves creatively, heal, build resiliency, and ultimately, become more empathetic and well-rounded community members.

The Ubuntu High School will be a testament to Ubuntu’s philosophy that access to world-class education and healthcare is every child’s right, not a privilege. With this groundbreaking milestone, Ubuntu will ensure their students receive the same quality of education and artistic opportunity as the global elite, and that South Africa’s future generations can thrive for decades to come.
