Student Art Project in Jersey City

24 MAR 2016

In 2015, Goldman Sachs celebrated its 11th season of the Student Art Project in Jersey City, New Jersey. Launched in 2005 in partnership with the Jersey City education, arts and nonprofit communities, the Student Art Project encourages local students to think critically about environmental and social issues, and to express themselves through creative works.

Goldman Sachs collaborated with the Educational Arts Team, a Jersey City nonprofit that brings the arts to local public schools and operates Camp Liberty, the Salvadori Center, a nonprofit that uses buildings, bridges, and parks within the community to bring math and science to life for students, and Jesse Wright, a local artist, to organize the 2015-2016 project, entitled, “What Camp Liberty Means to Me”.

Goldman Sachs volunteers lent their professional skills to develop a Capital Improvement Plan to modernize and expand Camp Liberty’s facility located within Liberty State Park. Goldman Sachs and its employees also provided funding to send more than 40 local Hudson County students to the camp through a needs-based scholarship program.  Students participating in the Student Art Project worked with Community TeamWorks volunteers to reimagine, redesign and build a model for a new entryway to the camp, incorporating the arts as well as engineering and architecture into this year’s project. The student’s artworks are replicated on large banners along Jersey City’s waterfront esplanade for the community to celebrate.
