Over £2.6m Contributed by Goldman Sachs Gives to Help Support Research into Childhood Brain Tumours

Over 100 current and former Goldman Sachs partners from around the globe came together to raise over £2.6m (approximately $4m) for research into childhood brain tumours, representing one of the most significant coordinated giving efforts ever through Goldman Sachs Gives.

A team of 14, including 4 Goldman Sachs partners based around the world -  Lora Robertson, Steve Windsor, Luca Lombardi and Stuart Riley, in addition to Goldman Sachs Managing Directors, Rob Ritchie and Dominique Jooris, and Goldman Sachs alumnus, Jon Hall, climbed the 8,848m height of Everest on skis in the Swiss Alps over four days, to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity.

Starting in La Tzoumaz and ending in Verbier, the four day “Everest in the Alps” challenge included 14 ascents over approximately 38 hours of uphill skiing.

The team were inspired to take part by Rob Ritchie, whose son is recovering from 18 months of chemotherapy after the diagnosis of an inoperable brain stem tumour at the age of five, and hope that their efforts will help highlight the underfunding of brain tumour research – which receives less than 2% of the UK’s £500m+ annual spend on cancer research.

The team raised nearly £2.7 million in total for brain tumour research, of which over £2.6 million was raised by over 100 current and former Goldman Sachs partners from across Europe, the US and Asia through Goldman Sachs Gives.

Steve Windsor, one of the Goldman Sachs partners who participated in the challenge, commented: “This is a fantastic demonstration of the partnership culture at Goldman Sachs; so many partners from all corners of the globe coming together to raise funds for this incredibly important cause. We hope that the fundraising achieved through Goldman Sachs Gives will help accelerate the medical research into this area that is so critical.”

Lora Robertson, who also took part in the trip, said: "The Goldman Sachs teamwork displayed on both the trip and in the fundraising efforts was tremendous. 7 colleagues on the mountain working together to get through this arduous challenge and Goldman Sachs people from across the globe supporting us from afar; this was a truly inspiring experience."

All funds raised will go to The Brain Tumour Charity, which, with support from Cancer Research UK, will fund a specific research project into childhood brain tumours.

Sarah Lindsell, chief executive of The Brain Tumour Charity, said: “We are immensely grateful to this committed team and support them all the way. This is the largest single donation we have received for research into childhood brain tumours and it will have a profound impact on what we can achieve.”
