Bengaluru Office Hosts Students for 'GS Quantify' Competition

14 DEC 2016

The Goldman Sachs office in Bengaluru engaged over 2,700 students for its fourth annual GS Quantify engineering challenge. The computer science, quantitative and machine learning contest featured 235 teams of students representing 11 engineering schools  competing to provide solutions to real-world quantitative finance and analytics problems they were given.

The teams were asked to develop solutions to business scenarios ranging from predicting bond liquidity to scheduling and reporting in real-time on processing units. Nine of the top teams were invited to present their ideas and hear from senior leaders in the business.

“Technology has been an integral part of the Bengaluru office, providing functional and technical global leadership in the areas of machine learning, workflow digitization and process automation,” said Nyron Latif, chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs offices in Bengaluru, in his opening remarks.

Cristina Patron, a managing director in the Finance Division,  highlighted the work of the engineering and strategist (“strats”) teams and describing how technology is at the core of our businesses. “Everything is technology and with this we continue to solve various real life problems on a daily basis,” she said. She also encouraged participants to think outside the box and to explore alternative ways  for finding the best possible solution.

The teams presented their solutions to a panel of Goldman Sachs professionals, and the winning teams – ‘Learners’ from  IIT BHU Varanasi, ‘faceless_men’ from IIT Guwahati and ‘DeltaVegaGamma’ from IIT Kharagpur received iPhonesTM as prizes. The winning teams exhibited a thorough understanding of the problem domains, attempted new approaches to problem statements and experimented with a variety of techniques that set them apart from their peers.

Students also had an opportunity to network with alumni from their institutes and senior leadership at a networking dinner. Gunjan Samtani, a managing director in the Technology Division, provided the closing remarks, noting, “Engineering is helping us drive our business forward, be it electronic trading, consumer finance or risk management.”

“My thought process was positively challenged by the panelists and the program helped me understand the depth of the technology work that is going on at Goldman Sachs”, reflected Samiksha, a participant from IIT BHU Varanasi.
